Fast walkers, fast thinkers?

Here’s another instagram post from Kyle Inspires. This one is about how fast people walk. He’s on Youtube and Facebook, too, but here are links to the story on Instagram and TikTok:

What variables does walking speed supposedly correlate with? How strongly does it correlate?

a) Watch Kyle Inspires’ short video all the way through. As you listen, write down any variables he mentions, and the levels of that variable. Here’s an example:
1. Variable: Walking speed. Levels: ranges from slower to faster than others (or perhaps., mph).

b) Sketch at least two scatterplots. On each, place “walking speed” on one axis. Place “____ speed” on the other axis….where ____ stands for one of the variables you listed in a).
How strong would you predict the relationship to be? Strength will be depicted in your scatterplot.

c) Does Kyle Inspires provide any details or links to the empirical research behind his video?

d) Use research tools to find an empirical article that finds that individual differences in walking speed are correlated with speed of eating, speed of processing information, and so on. Try PsycINFO, Google Scholar, or even AI research tools. What search terms or questions did you try? What did you find? (I used AI tools!)

e) Assuming you found at least one study, how strong was the relationship in terms of r? Use this tool (https://rpsychologist.com/correlation/) to check how strong that relationship is. Compare the relationship in the study to the one you created in b).

f) Comment on the strength of the correlation in the study you found, compared to the sensationalist tone of the Kyle Inspires video.

g) Why do you think Kyle Inspires is producing these videos? Is his goal to… Educate? Entertain? Sell something? Punk us? Inform? Create an emotional reaction? Defend your answer.
